    Description

KM MB9, undated type issued circa 1542-55, issued when Mexico was under Spanish control, in the name of King Charles I and Johanna.  Quarter dollar size silver coin, with the king on the obverse.
The coin was issued in the name of Charles I and his mother Johanna of Castile, who was the daughter of Isabella (who funded Columbus' first voyage).  She was also known as "Juana la Loca" (Johanna the Mad (or Crazy)); she was declared insane by her father and imprisoned; she remained imprisoned until her death in 1555, even though she was officially co-monarch of Spain.
Silver coins of Mexico were legal tender in the United States until 1857, and the U. S. dollar was based upon the Spanish Colonial 8 reales coin (formal name: "Peso de 8 reales"). One real became known as one "bit"; this is why "2 bits" equals a quarter dollar.
